DivX Movies and WiFi Network Support Coming to DS?
[Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  14]
A Kotaku source says that yes, they are: "Nintendo is preparing to launch two pretty exciting things for the DS".

The first: a WiFi network aimed at letting gamers interact with each other not in the same room. It will also let download games, however, no hotspots have been accounted for; as minor problems are still being ironed out.

The second: a potential answer to the PSP's multimedia muscle; that is, the ability to compress DivX movies for play on a DS through the same kinds of cartridges used for games--with no additional peripheral needed. The capacity of a single cart is around 2 hours. The movie to hit the DS first is rumoured to be an "animated feature, perhaps from Disney and Pixar".

Yes, this is still a rumour--but it's not at all far from reality.

V-Pocket Patent Explained (DS)
[Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  15]
Gamer Centric has the dirt:

"Nintendo had recently licensed Palm OS based PDA software without any details on why they had done it. Nintendo sources have now revealed that the V-Pocket patent filed by Nintendo a few days ago concerns this licensing. E3 2005 will be the first witness of the Nintendo V-Pocket suite: a complete line of personal organizer tools for the Nintendo DS. Nintendo believes PDA software coupled with the already existing touch screen of the DS will put it above its high profiled rival, the PSP."

Well, this seems like a nice add on, but I don't think I'd pay full price for it--here's hoping it's $25!

Nintendo to Launch Concept Store in NYC
[Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  7]
By way of Evil Avatar, IGN Cube reports on details about a retail store concept by Nintendo which would be housed in New York's Rockafeller plaza. The conceptional store could potentionally replace the Pokemon Center that is located in the spot where the new store would be.

The store promises state-of-the-art design and structure, and will boast everything from Nintendo themed paraphernalia to the newest software and hardware. The new outlet, which is yet to be named, will undoubtedly play host to a number of special events, such as software and hardware launch celebrations.

Personally I think this is an excellent idea; not only does this get Nintendo more recognized in North America, it would certainly also help Nintendo rid themselves of their "kiddie image" that oh-so-many people complain about (usually unjustly, anyway). Seems to me like this store would be in the same vein as the one already opened in Japan.

Revolutionary Details Leaked
[Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  8]
I know it's a lame headline, but I'm tired and it's 2:40 in the morning so I'm not going to be all that creative! The gist of it is that some dude allegedly got ahold of some super secret documents that were to be displayed at an upcoming shareholder meeting, and the Nintendo Revolution, or Nintendo 21 as these documents "confirm," will be a hot topic. If you want the skinny, hit up 4 Colour Rebellion for all the dirt.

Additionally, a picture was drawn from memory by the guy who read over the memorandums, so here it is:

Nintendo Morsels
[Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  9]
It wouldn't make sense to create three different news posts all dealing with Nintendo, so I'm just going to assimilate them into this fancy little post!

  • Nintendo DS Online Rumours: Computer & Video Games, the father of unfounded rumours, apparently has some "insider" information about the DS and its online capabilities. Riiight.

"With our juices flowing from this tasty - and official - morsel, we pressed our sources close to the Japanese games giant for more information. We were informed that an online service for DS is definitely on the way, and that you'll be able to download/upload information as well as play games online. In addition, we learned that at least two third-party developers already have the DS online, and have even managed to get more than 16 DSs linked wirelessly at one time.

The likelihood is - and this is only speculation at present - that DS online would work is a similar fashion to the rumoured plans for PSP's wi-fi networking we reported yesterday (catch up here). You'd need to be in range with a wireless access point to the internet (a PC, a public wireless hotspot like a café or airport, or even a Nintendo Revolution...?), which would then upload and download information from your DS and send it across the network. In this way you could play against DS owners around the world."

  • Nintendo's future: If anyone cares anymore, people are still saying Nintendo is doomed.

  • "Super Punch-Out!!" on EA Fight Night Round 2 (GCN): Just as the mini-headline implies.

Players will also be able to unlock Little Mac from Super Punch-Out!! to duke it out with more than 30 real world boxers featured in EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 2.

    Nintendo DS Sells ˝ Million
    [Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  5]

    Buy "Retro" Nintendo Arcade Units!
    [Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  1635]
Namco's releasing a 3-in-1 arcade unit housing Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong, Jr., and Mario Bros. The unit features a vintage-style cabinet that includes artwork from all three abovementioned games covering the whole thing. On top of that, it also has a crisp 25 inch screen. Moreover, all the games are as they were when first in arcades during the 1980's.

Two sets of controls (joystick and buttons) are emphasized on the control panel for playing any of the three games. Additionally, the game can be operated via coins, or it can be set to "free play" for usage at home--unless you want to make a profit at home.

A flyer advertising the unit has also been released and includes collateral details on the arcade unit.

    Nintendo DS Price Set
    [Snoop - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  0]
According to IGNDS Nintendo's next system will launch at a price of $150 USD. And when will this unique piece of hardware launch? November 21st, 2004! Just two months away. Nintendo's next input into the new wave of handhelds is defintely considered the most unique. The system has two screens, one of which is a touchscreen with a stylus, Wi-Fi support, and backwards compatibility for GBA games. There are currently over 100 companies supporting the NDS, and Nintendo currently has 20 games in development for the system.

Unlike previous generations of handhelds, Nintendo has some real competition this time around. Sony's PSP is coming ever closer aswell. However, still not much information is known on Sony's entry. Based on the Sony name alone it will probably sell very well. It's expected the PSP will launch sometime next year, though the price is anyone's guess.

    Nintendo DS To Utilize VoiP
    [Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  0]
What is "VoiP" and why should you care? Well, that is an acronym for Voice over IP. What it means for the DS is that, when used in union with the recently rumoured headset, will allow owners of the Nintendo DS to make free phone calls when taking advantage of an available wireless hotspot. Apparently this idea was implemented to entrench the DS in the gadget market as well as the gaming market -- but of course not to the extent of the PSP. More as it comes.

    GBA SP Price Drop Imminent?
    [Sodge - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  1]
The internet says so, so it must be true! Also, some retail chains in the U.S. also say this... but who really trusts EB anyway? The price drop for the GBA SP -- priced at $99 for months -- is estimated at a cool $79. Apparently Nintendo wants to get the GBA train moving again this holiday season since it fell short of its hardware shipment expectations this fiscal year, which was this past March.

Additionally, Nintendo is apparently going to give the launch price on the DS at the Tokyo Game Show at the end of this September -- much like what Sony is doing for its PSP.

If it happens, it'll be reported here. So you better come and check back!

    DivX for the GameCube
    [Ironclad - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  1]
DivX for the GameCube has been announced, the details are below.

"Earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment released the enormously popular "Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos" game featuring great-looking cinematic scenes encoded in DivX video. Warcraft III showed the gaming world what DivX video can do, and this week brought everyone's favorite video technology even further into the universe of games with the release of the DivX for GameCube Software Development Kit.

DivX for GameCube was co-developed by DivXNetworks and Factor 5, the company behind the multimillion selling "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" game franchise and the MusyX(tm) sound tools. The DivX for GameCube SDK lets licensed Nintendo GameCube developers easily and seamlessly integrate DivX video to create highly compressed, DVD-quality cinematics. That means you can start looking forward to a new generation of GameCube titles that will knock your socks off with the power of DivX video."

To read up on this great news check out http://www.divx.com/gamecube/. Also, if you don't quite "get this" read an interview, by IGN Cube, with Julian Eggebretch of Factor 5 by directing your browser to http://cube.ign.com/articles/372/372837p1.html.

    XBox live and other updates
    [Elfstone - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  1]
First off, CNN has an article about the beta test for XBox Live which can be viewed by clicking here.

There's also some information about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4(slated for a November release) around. The game will have all 15 skaters from previous versions, including Bob Burnquist(absent in THPS 3). Seems that this version won't have the same style career mode as the previous versions, instead each level will contain specific challenges that can be done with any skater of your choice. There won't be any real goals to complete unless you want to, in which case you approach a designated character who will give you a goal to complete.

Gamers.com has an interview with Bill Roper of Blizzard about StarCraft: Ghost, which you can read by clicking here. Looks like a pretty good read for anyone interested in the game.

Finally Sega appears to be being sued by the American Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for racial discrimination. The EEOC claims Sega fired 12 game testers out of preference for Filipino testers. People will sue for anything these days.

    DivX and the 'Cube
    [Ironclad - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  1]
With today's release of the DivX for Gamecube Software Development Kit (SDK), Nintendo Gamecube developers can now easily create highly compressed DVD-quality DivX video cinematics and seamlessly integrate high performance playback into Gamecube games. For more information on DivX for Gamecube, visit www.divx.com/gamecube.

DivX for Gamecube was developed by Factor 5, the software development house and Nintendo technology partner behind the multimillion selling "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" game franchise and the MusyX sound tools for multiple game platforms, and DivXNetworks, Inc., the company that created the revolutionary patent-pending DivX video compression technology.

The superior compression and visual quality of DivX video, most recently used in Blizzard Entertainment's best-selling "Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos" provides game developers with an ideal solution for high-quality cinematics in Gamecube titles. DivX for Gamecube offers a number of advanced features specifically optimized for Gamecube developers, including:

    • DVD-like quality at file sizes 7-10 times smaller than MPEG-2
    • Support for the advanced features of the cutting-edge DivX 5.02 Pro video technology including pyschovisual modeling, bi-directional encoding, and global motion compensation.
    • Encoding speeds 2-3X faster than real-time
    • Uses both CPU and graphics chip ("Flipper") in parallel for extremely fast performance
    • Hand-optimized assembler-code for maximum usage of all Gamecube CPU ("Gekko") extensions and minimal cache misses
    • Maximum flexibility and ease of use, with the ability to map video on any surface and run in parallel with other applications
    • Tight integration with the MusyX and AX sound libraries for audio streaming

"We are pleased to work closely with the talented team at Factor 5 to develop the DivX for Gamecube product. DivX is the perfect video compression technology for game developers and publishers seeking the highest visual quality, best compression and fastest encoding and decoding speed," said Darrius Thompson, director of research and development at DivXNetworks, Inc. (www.divxnetworks.com).

"The DivX for Gamecube SDK was designed to provide developers with a complete, easy-to-use solution based on the world's most powerful video compression technology," said Thomas Engel, Director of Technology at Factor 5, LLC. "By partnering with DivXNetworks, we are able to offer game developers a toolset of cutting-edge video technology specifically optimized for creating the highest quality cinematics in Nintendo Gamecube titles."

Hailed as a "revolutionary product" by Tom's Hardware Guide, DivX MPEG-4-compatible video compression technology has been downloaded over 65 million times. The newest version of the technology, DivX 5.02, is capable of data compression ratios that exceed virtually any technology available today and offers up to 41% better compression than previous versions of the technology, at over twice the encoding speed of competing technologies.

Ironcald dives into Animal Crossing, the open-ended game from Nintendo where all you do is live a life, play games and pay off your mortages. A snippit is below.

The first time I poped Animal Crossing into my GameCube I knew to expect something strange. Of course, I was greeted by a dog with a guitar (totokeke), who started telling me about the world of Animal Crossing. Then, after I got a debreifing on the matter, I magically found myself on a train.

Nintendo Allows Demo Disks In US?
    [Ironclad - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  2]
According to Planet Gamecube, Nintendo is allowing companies to distribute thier demo disks accross the United States. The first demo disk to be released will be Resident Evil 0, though it's not clear if it's the same as the Japanese trial. Also, how the disks will be distributed, is also a mystery, but I'm guessing through Nintendo Power.

Also, no one knows if Nintendo themselves will be release any demo disks, but we still can hope for the best.

    More on the Nintendo/Rare/Microsoft Saga
    [Snoop - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  80]
According to PlanetGameCube, it seems Rare will retain the rights to Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Conker. Thus, none of these titles will appear on the GameCube. Considering PGC is generally very reliable, I'm trust them on this one.

Will we ever see these titles again? Almost definately, but of course on Xbox. In one way I'm a bit saddened, on the other hand I know Rare made these games what they were; with their twisted sense of humor.

Nintendo Named Top Publicity Traded Japanese Company
    [Ironclad - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  0]
A recently conducted study by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun has named Nintendo the top publicly traded Japanese company. The study is said to have used a multivariable evaluation system including annual profit, debt, and shareholder rankings. Nintendo has been absent from the annual list for the past three years, but this year has taken charge over the other companies by driving profits and keeping tight controls on expenditures during fiscal 2002. Other strong performers included retail chain Seven- Eleven and drug company Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical. Shares of Nintendo closed down 110 yen in late trading last Friday at 14,270 yen despite the good news.

Great News! Hopefully more good news on Nintendo to come.

Legend of Zelda GC Delayed Once More...
    [Ironclad - Nintendo Village] [Comments  -  1]
Nintendo.com is now listing the Legend of Zelda for the GameCube as a possible release date of Q2 2003. June to be exact. The site has the game listed for this release date on two different pages. Here the game is listed as June 2003, as Nintendo second most wanted game; right below Super Mario Sunshine. Here, however, it is listed Q2 2003 (the second link is a link to the game details page).

Nintendophiles has an update: "Now the game page lists Q1 2002 and the top ten list list March 2003 (which falls under Q1 2002). Which date IS it?"

Update (5:58PM EST): Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda GC has NOT been delayed and is still good for a Feb. 2002 (Q1 2003) release. Thanks to GameQubed for the tip!
