Why has the GameBoy series of systems been popular? Has it been because of Pokemon? No. Has it been because of the large amount of games? No. Has it been because it is the only game in town? Nope. Than why you ask? Because it's portable and it's cheap, plain and simple.

The GameBoy has been out for almost 13 years in the US, and it has over 1,000 games in it's library. Competition has come and gone, but the GameBoy has always stayed on top. Nintendo owns 99% of the handheld market in the US and 95% in Japan. So what made the GameBoy popular? Well, lets go through the reasons.

What makes the GameBoy unique is that no matter where you are, you can play it. If your at your grandma's house, and all she has is one of those black and white TVs, than there is no chance of getting a good gaming experience. But when all of your friends are whining and moping, you can pull out your GameBoy and has up to 20 hours of gaming, right at your fingertips.

What also makes the GameBoy popular is it's price. The GameBoy and it's games are hyper cheap, the GameBoy Pocket is only $40 now, and GameBoy games can go as low as $20 at launch. So for the people with little money, the GameBoy offers up a more than equal substitute to console gaming.

Last year the best selling system was not the Playstation 2, nor the Dreamcast, but it was the GameBoy Color. Why could this be? Well, over the past few years, Pokemon has added to the success of the GameBoy series, but people seem to forget that there were other successful games for the portable systems. Games like Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Super Mario Bros. DX, and Link's Awakening DX. All of these, and more helped contribute to the GameBoy's ultimate success in the market.

But what about the future? The GameBoy Advance has already sold more than 1,000,000 units, and it hasn't even been released in Japan for more than a month. GameBoy Advance games have also sold extremely well, Super Mario Bros. Advance has already sold almost 400,000 copies.

But what also contributes to the continued success of the GameBoy series of systems is the developer support. Hundreds of developers have worked on, or are working on GameBoy games. And with this developer support, this ensures the GameBoy will be around for a while.

Thirteen years is a long time, there is a good chance your parents also owned a GameBoy at one point in time. The GameBoy will be along for a long time to come. Over 100,000,000 units of the GameBoy Advance are expected to be sold by 2005. The GameBoy series has already sold 110,000,000 units world wide in all of it's forms, it's the best selling system EVER.

People can only guess where the GameBoy will be in another thirteen years, but I would say it will be just as popular as it is today, and probably even more so!
