E3 2001: News Stories Archive: Day 1

DVD Playing GameCube To US in 2002/2003!

You read it right, Yahoo reports Nintendo and Matsushita have announced that the GameCube which can play DVD movies (or vise-versa) will be released in the United States sometime in the 2002/2003 business year. This means that those Sony and Microsoft propaganda spewers can now shut the hell up. Unlike the PS2, the DVD player will not be sub-par, it will have the same options and clarity as a standard DVD player.

But it does come at a cost. Though the price has not yet been set as of now, it is expected it will be about $100 more than the standard GameCube, which will be at most $200 at launch, so it should be around $300 when it's released.

For those who don't know, Matsushita (better known as Panasonic in the US) is Nintendo's partner which helped develop the GameCube's CAV Optical Disc system.

More as they come in today!

Brief update, nothing big has happened, yet, but there are still five more hours of show.

Nintendo & Online Games
It's already known Sega is working on Phantasy Star Online 2 for the GameCube, but what about Nintendo? Well, at today's keynote speech, which ended an hour ago, Peter Main, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Nintendo of America Inc. dogded questions about online gaming and simply stated “we have development teams working on it.”

Sega Has 10!
Sega has announced it has ten GameCube games in development, three of which will be playable at this year's show. The three playable games, Phantasy Star Online Version 2, Monkey Ball and Virtua Striker 3 Version 2002, can be seen on the show floor. It has not yet been announced what the other seven games are, though it's a good chance one of them is a Sonic game.

F-Zero GC Confirmed!
F-Zero is coming to the GameCube! Nintendo is showing a brief clip of the game above their booth. The game is very early in development, and more information on the game should be released at SpaceWorld this August.

GC Gets Eight Players
Yes, eight players! This is the first next-console to support eight players via a single multitap-like device which will make the GameCube's four controller ports into eight! Currently, Madden 2002 will support eight players and NHL Hitz will support six players, it's not yet known what other titles will feature this, though I'm guessing a majority of sports titles will take advantage of EIGHT PLAYER CAPABILITIES.

It should be really interesting to see what it will be like to have eight players at the same time on the same screen. This is going to be hella cool!

Turok Evolution Details
Turok is going to return. Summer 2002 will bring us Turok Evolution, which according to the development team, will take us back to Dinosaur Hunter in terms of gameplay.

"Turok Evolution is an exciting blend of sophisticated technological advancement and raw, primal ferocity. We have placed a huge emphasis on the return of the Dinosaur Hunter, and fans of the series will see these efforts come to life as they explore lush environments teeming with prehistoric life all while taking part in an epic story in the war-torn Lost Lands. In terms of game play, visuals, story line and character development, Turok Evolution represents a dedication on behalf of the entire development team that we are certain Turok fans and gamers everywhere will love." said Dave Dienstbier, creative director of Acclaim Studios Austin.

Mario Game?
The speculation continues of weather or not Mario will star in his own game within the first three months. Could Mario being shadowed by Luigi this time around? Only time will tell, but already three or four people from Nintendo, including Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo's director and manager, Satoru Iwata, have hinted at it. So don't count out a Mario game near the GameCube's release, if not on it. Ofcourse, we'll still have Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart GC.

Snoop's Nintendo @ E3 Impressions: Day Two

Another day another E3, but the only difference than yesterday is there was more info, and some first real information on third-parties and Nintendo.

Today we learned about a heap of new titles, including F-Zero GC, Phantasy Star Online Version 2, and "Perfect Dark 2." All of these games will surely be hits for the GameCube, and will make the GameCube a major player.

But I was dissappointed that we didn't see a Zelda game for GameCube or Pokemon games. My guess is they didn't show them because they aren't far enough into development, which is acceptable. It's only three months away till SpaceWorld 2001, and I think that show will have more info on GameCube games ten fold

All of the titles being shown this year at E3 were amazing though, according to everyone. Pikmin was a huge surprise, mixing strategy and action elements, and Rogue Leader is currently THE game to see. But one can only imagine what we will see in three short months when Nintendo lets the preverbial dogs out.

Don't forget to check out our GameCube screenshots archive and our GameBoy Advance screenshots archive. We have added dozens of new screenshots today, and there are more to come! We should have screenshots for four more GBA games and two more GameCube games very soon, as they are currently sitting in Scoots' e-mail box *cough*. Well, two more days of E3 await, and one can only imagine what we'll see.
